What Makes VCC Exceptional

Ask our residents what makes VCC exceptional and many will tell you it is the tireless work of our volunteers. One day a month a group of volunteers led by Michelle Suarez devote several hours on a Saturday morning to picking up trash along Corkscrew Road. Their efforts keep the road near our front gate looking litter-free. Male volunteers dressed in lime green t-shirts can be seen every week around our community tackling a variety of construction projects that have included sidewalk, bridge, retaining wall and outbuilding roof repair. Their skilled contributions save VCC residents tens of thousands of dollars each year that would otherwise be paid to outside contractors.

The Deadheaders are the women volunteers who take on landscaping tasks. Dressed in bright pink shirts, they can be seen every Monday and Wednesday morning working in Common Grounds areas. The Deadheaders work year-round removing dead and dying plants, weeding flower beds, removing strangler vines from our palms and oak trees and clearing organic debris from our swales.

Similar to the Volunteers, the contributions made by the Deadheaders saves our community significant money over time, replacing some of the work that would be done by hired landscapers. VCC’s typical contract with our outside landscapers specifies hourly rates of $65 or higher. Using that cost estimate, the 43 hours that the Deadheaders worked in April saved VCC nearly $2,800. Over nine months, the Deadheaders worked a combined 404 hours, saving VCC more than $26,000! If you are interested in becoming a Deadheader this summer, please contact Barb McNally at [email protected] to be added to our mailing list. For residents wishing to make a contribution to our community but unable to commit to a fixed schedule, please consider participating in our Annual Community Service Day. This event, typically scheduled during November, involves one Saturday of community service around VCC performing tasks such as picking up trash, pulling weeds, painting benches and lamp posts and other maintenance type projects
