Deadheaders Grateful for Help from the VCC Volunteers

The Deadheaders have received some much-appreciated help this summer from male Volunteers Chuck Brenner and Marvin Davis. Chuck drives the backhoe for the Volunteers. He volunteered his services with the backhoe to help the Deadheaders dig up several rows of dead and dying bushes from Country Creek Drive in front of the condo buildings. Chuck dug up the plants while Marvin and the Deadheaders stacked the brush, loaded it on the Volunteers’ work truck and transported it to the Maintenance Shed waste site. Thanks to Chuck and Marvin, a job that would have required days of backbreaking labor by the Deadheaders was easily completed within a few hours.

Chuck continues to assist the Deadheaders with other projects this summer, driving the Volunteers’ truck and helping transport loads of plant debris to the VCC dump site. With the start of the summer rainy season, keeping water runoff flowing through the swales is essential and the Deadheaders are working furiously during June to clear out palm fronds that have dropped in the swale. We have been removing at least four to six truckloads of fronds every Monday and Wednesday workday.

Given the amount of physical labor this work entails, the Deadheaders are extremely fortunate this summer to have a larger than usual group of volunteers. In past years, we were lucky if four or five volunteers worked during the summer months. This year the Deadheaders have been blessed with seven or eight member crews most workdays, including a few volunteers who are new to the group.
